Putting it Together: M2M Architectures and Services
IOTC-03
Telxxis
The IoT cannot become pervasive on a single device family, or on a single edge network type. This session brings it all together and explains how IP-based M2M communications capabilities such as CoAP, HTTP, and MQTT allow sets of systems to be aggregated, to interwork, and to federate. These are the tools needed to scale massively, and to build interconnected applications and services; extending from multi-room… to multi-national, and fulfilling the promise of the IoT; “Everything Connected”.

Since we are still in the beginning stages of this game changing trend, it is important to understand how to prepare for its implications. In this session, the speaker will highlight the key components that CIOs and other leaders must have in order to implement a complete IoT solution and explain how the trend has affected VMware’s approach. Key components organizations need to implement a complete IoT solution: - A strategic and focused use case that either drives innovation, business process efficiency or new revenue models. - An infrastructure on which to build an IoT solution - A means to provision and manage millions of things on that infrastructure - A way to collect, store, and analyze the massive amounts of data those things collect, glean meaningful insights from that data, and then translate those insights into worthwhile actions

We are fast moving into a hyper connected society – and 5G will be a fundamental foundation. It is easy to think of 5G networks as mainly a quantitative evolution similar to previous transitions, such as higher bitrate, lower latency and more devices. But 5G security will just be a qualitative leap forward to meet the demands of a Networked Society. This session will cover the unique security challenges from a large number of connected devices. •?5G is expected to drive IoT. Adding connectivity for billions of new devices will open new security threats. Currently victims of ransomware are locked out of their PC or smartphone. With 5G, ransomware victims could be locked out of their house and car, and many other connected devices. Multiplying the number of connected devices equals opportunity for attacks such as DDoS. Bottom line — more devices connected at higher speeds results in increased risk. •?Increased data transfer speeds implies higher threats of malicious file transfers. With high transfer rates, data exfiltration or large malicious file transfers could be more easily missed. •?More severe consequences of security breaches due to the nature of technology enabled by 5G include remote surgery and driverless cars. The consequences of security breaches in these examples could be particularly dire, even life threatening. The goal is to ensure that consumers maintain a high level of trust with these cutting-edge technologies so that the entire IoT movement can continue to thrive.

The Online Trust Alliance (OTA) established the IoT Trustworthy Working Group (ITWG) in January 2015. This multi-stakeholder initiative has developed and published the IoT Trust Framework – 30 principles to enhance security, privacy and sustainability in IoT. Craig Spiezle, CEO and Executive Director of the Online Trust Alliance will discuss the Framework and its principles, which form the foundation of a voluntary code of conduct and certification program to enhance consumer trust and support IoT innovation. Empowered with these principles, developers, device makers and service providers will find proscriptive guidance to make “security and privacy by design” a priority from the onset of product development, and address issues holistically.
